Looking for a Magellan GPS? Here’s Why we Like Magellan the Best.

Use a Magellan GPS and You Won’t Get Lost

Why We Like Magellan Mobile GPS Units the Most

As an airline Captain, I would feel deprived without my GPS.

In a car, the Magellan mobile GPS line offers the greatest value and performance.

Overall, I have found that the Magellan mobile GPS units are the most user-friendly and intuitive of all the mobile GPS competitors.

Personally, I dislike reading a huge manual and having to learn quirks and counter-intuitive things about a new device.

I also found the Magellan mobile GPS products the best value for your dollar.

If you are going to spend the money for a mobile GPS, it is important that you get the features and usability that are important to your intended use.

For example, if you also want to take your mobile GPS on a hike, then the Magellan GPS crossover line with the long battery life is something you want. If not, don’t waste your money on a model with that capability.

I will address some of the Magellan mobile GPS features that I like the best and then give you and overview of my top picks for the Magellan GPS line.

Here are the Magellan GPS features that I like the best :

  • Both visual and voice guidance- that makes these a safety enhancing device rather than a distraction

  • Easy to use touch screens and menus
  • The Magellan GPS screens automatically adjust in intensity to nighttime lighting levels

  • The maps are build in so you don’t have to go download a bunch of maps before you take you r mobile GPS on a trip. (I.e. fly somewhere and take the GPS with you to use in your rental car)

  • You can a trip with multiple stops and immediately see the quickest way between them. This saves you time and gas.

  • Bluetooth® wireless capability. What that means is that if you have a Bluetooth® capable cell phone, you can make hands-free calls through the microphone and speakers in the Magellan GPS
  • You can get live traffic updates, which can be integrated to reroute you around the trouble spots. More time and fuel savings for you. Most Magellan GPS units have this free for an initial period to see if it is important to you. Then you have to pay if you want to continue the monthly service.

  • Technology that allows for quick access to a satellite signal. This is important if you take your Magellan GPS on trips with you. You want the capability for it to quickly acquire the satellite signal when you are in your rental car and trying to begin your journey. Without this, you will be using the small, inadequate, rental car maps for several minutes before your mobile GPS finds out where it is.

  • I really like the 3-D Bird's-eye view. It helps you with what we called “SA” in the fighter business- Situational Awareness. You have a big-picture view of where you are.

  • Routing options. You can decide whether you want the quickest route, the shortest route, toll avoidance, and whether you want to use the most or least amount of freeways.

  • Did you miss that turn? Your Magellan mobile GPS will automatically reroute you back on course. This also helps you if there is a detour. You can get back to where you need to be in the shortest amount of time.

  • Favorite’s list. You can beep an address book of the places you most often go. That makes for easy programming.

  • You can easily transfer your Magellan GPS to any other vehicle. This is handy out of town trips with rental cars, or if there are multiple vehicles in your family. Warning- this will cause marital strife because you both will want to use the mobile GPS.

  • Pilot Paul’s Top Pick- Magellan GPS

If I were going to buy a mobile GPS today, I would pick the Magellan Prestige RoadMate 6000T Portable GPS (MG915).

    Why?

I think it is the best value.

It is in the medium price range but has most of the features and usability of ones that often cost $200 more.
